    Akoi AKA

    Franco-African visual artist

Observing the world and its transparency. Within it, shadows pass by. For many years, I have dedicated myself to understanding painting and photography—capturing color, manipulating its texture, sketching, and scribbling to represent things as they truly are. I love to explore. Certain worlds hold hidden secrets that suddenly leap out at you. They reveal and express themselves through others; their strength lies in their identity.

Akoi Aka is a contemporary Franco-African visual artist whose work is distinguished by an approach blending painting, sculpture, writing, and philosophical reflection. After spending his childhood in West Africa, he settled in France in the late 1980s. This dual heritage—African and Western—forms the foundation of his artistic universe and deeply informs his creative process.

With an academic background in cell biology, Akoi Aka has developed a vision of art influenced by science, particularly human anatomy and the study of materials. His creations explore concepts of identity, memory, transparency, and transformation, as well as the relationship between body, mind, and time.

Over the years, his work has evolved from figurative painting featuring warm colors toward more abstract compositions, where material, light, and the medium itself play a pivotal role. He experiments with techniques such as painting on glass and relief works, seeking to move beyond the traditional canvas to create immersive installations and artistic concepts.

Alongside his creative practice, Akoi Aka is dedicated to promoting contemporary art. He founded “La Tour de Guet” in Tresques (Gard), a cultural space housed in a historic monument that hosts exhibitions, artist residencies, and cultural events. He also helped organize the Tresques Contemporain festival, contributing to the visibility of contemporary art in the region.

Through his work, Akoi Aka invites the viewer to reflect on the human condition, the balance between science and emotion, and the connections linking different cultures and forms of artistic expression. His universe—at once poetic, symbolic, and experimental—makes him a unique figure on the French contemporary art scene.
